Group Values
"You are what you do, not what you say you are."Yvon Chouinard
You are expected to be in the lab for core attendance hours of 11–4, Monday to Friday, with one day a week remote working. Regularly working for longer than a 40-hour week is discouraged. Working regularly on weekends is discouraged.
20% time for learning a new topic or skill related to your work. This time is expected to have some output (e.g. a presentation, a webpage, or new documentation in the wiki) but is otherwise yours to use. You may also take your 20% time in a single ten-week block if you want to attend a course, go on exchange to another lab or something similar.
Science is broader and deeper than any single individual can master. You are not expected to come in knowing everything you need to know because science is also a journey. We strive to explicitly outline our skill sets and experience profiles in internal webpages to build bridges between members with different experience profiles.
We respect the time that is needed to learn complex techniques. We review code together to improve our skills, ensure that we understand it, and to counteract the negative effects of generative AI whilst still benefiting from its advantages.
After your initial training projects you are encouraged to design your own projects, provided they fall within the broad research theme of the group.
Science is sometimes an unpredictable and erratic job. It calls for flexibility. For example, a long-running complex experiment might mean you work more than 40 hours in a week and can't do your 20% time. You log this and take double time the following week.
